LA LIGA SANTANDER
It seems like a lie, because they have been involved
in the decisions of most competitions, but the fact is that Real Madrid hasn’t
won La Liga since 2012, and only that time since 2008! It’s an incredibly low
for Los Blancos but Zidane showed he
can be the man for the job, with a great 2nd half of season that
culminated in another Champions League success. This year the Spanish teams
were very quiet in the transfer market, stating that they are happy with their
squads and just want the ball to start rolling.
Neymar has been away on international duty, so Luis
Enrique on has MS to his disposal, something that he will gladly take anyway.
Barça has been the most consistent of the teams in La Liga, proven by the
amount of titles they collected, but they have been away from European glory,
something that Camp Nou craves for. With their wonderful trio up front and a
well-rounded defense, where Sergi Roberto as been a nice surprise at right-back,
Barça started the season in true Barça fashion, with a thrashing over Bétis and
a tough, hard-fought win at Bilbao.
REAL MADRID
It’s hard to know what to expect from Real Madrid in
their domestic league. Whilst they are always obvious candidates, it feels that
Pérez created a culture around the club where winning the Champions League is
as – if not more – important than the league. If the fans like to see Barcelona
rivals celebrating it every year – and when not them is the Madrid rivals…-
must hurt them though, so you’d feel that perhaps this is the year to try and
get the title back.
Ronaldo is only
getting back to full fitness now, but Bale has guided young players like Asenio
and the returned Morata to two good wins, proving they are ready for the
challenge.
It’s perhaps
a bit premature but this might be Simeone’s last year in charge of Los Rojiblancos. The start of the season
was appalling, and after two Champions League finals lost, it seems this
Atlético Madrid might be becoming a bit stale and teams are starting to
understand how to frustrate them. Two very disappointing results and Griezmann
press rant might indicate trouble, but it’s still very early, and Simeone being
the motivator that he is, things can still change for the better.
The League
As expected only three teams were able to win their first two games, but very surprisingly one of them is newly promoted Las Palmas, not Atletico Madrid. The Canary Islands team were absolutely perfect in their first two games, starting with a 2-4 at the Mestalla, following that with a 5-1 thumping over Granada. Barça and Real did their part and Sevilla had a wonderful hymn to football in the 6-4 win against Espanyol. Simeone’s team already has four points to recover and they need to step up sooner rather than later.
