La Liga Santander - The early stages

LA LIGA SANTANDER

The first big shock of the season came from the most unexpected of places. Barça hosted Alaves, in what should have been a text book win, and they were stunned by a very hard-working team that did their job and were rewarded with a moment to remember. Apart from that the league has started pretty lackluster with the main teams getting to the top places fairly quickly.

FC BARCELONA

It was a game after the international break, a game that preceded Champions League, but losing to Alaves at the Camp Nou, after rotating the squad that much, it must have been a dent on Luis Enrique’s ego. Three points lost and seeing rival Real Madrid alone at the top was the result, but with MSN on the pitch, things just turn easier for Enrique.

REAL MADRID

Starting the season without Cristiano Ronaldo available, people wondered if Real Madrid would be able to step up and begin the matches without many slips. Zidane and his boys held their place and they are still unbeaten, top of the league, and playing good football, looking not so dependent on Ronaldo. They scrapped the win in the Champions League, but they showed fighting spirit to comeback and the Merengues seem a force to be reckoned

ATLÉTICO MADRID

All they needed was an international break to regroup and focus. The start was shocking, but Simeone picked his team up and they brought him back a 0-4 at Celta Vigo and a 5-0 over Sporting Gijón. Now that the season is really starting, with Champions League games also being a factor in team management, Atleti responded with three successive wins and all clean sheets. Impressive

Latest results

It has been a very lackluster start for La Liga, with the big teams smashing their opponenets more often than being upset, even though Atleti started with two draws and Barca was stunned by Alaves. There are, however, two big surprises, one positive and one negative. We start with Valencia that has just been shocking. They have been going on a downward spiral, even though Jorge Mendes is (in)directly involved in the club. The good surprise is Las Palmas. Four games and they were only defeated by Sevilla, having started the season with a 2-4 win at the Mestalla. It’s unlikely they’ll carry on with this form, but they have a good chance to prove themselves on Saturday 24th, when they host Real Madrid.

Table after 4 matches - Las Palmas would finish the league now as they swap roles with Valencia
